Elementary

I watched the series premier of Elementary last night, and I liked it.

The fact that I've been sick for over a week probably has something to do with me watching all these new shows. I have no idea if I'll keep it up, but this might be one of the keepers when I start cutting back.

I'm just wondering whether the premise will be able to keep going strong through the whole season. The show is well done, but I'm wondering whether the premise will get tired after a few shows. Of course, the same might have been said for House or Lie to Me, and I liked both of those all the way through, though apparently nobody else felt the same of the latter.

Elementary is "Sherlock Holmes with a Twist". In this case, Sherlock is a bit of a weirdo who is apparently a recovering drug addict or something, though I expect we'll get more details on that later. He's got all the typical Sherlock traits of being hyper-observant and deducing all sorts of stuff normal people wouldn't. Just what you'd expect, though in this case he's in the US in the modern age and working as a sort of freelance consultant to the police.

Watson is a girl played by Lucy Liu. I expect she's going to develop her talents at being Watson as the series goes on. At this point, she's playing some sort of ex-surgeon who's decided to be a live-in friend to recovering addicts. The premise all seems pretty made-up and I can't really imagine such a person existing in real life. Who knows though. I'm sure stranger arrangements have happened.

As it stands, she's been hired by Sherlock's dad to live with him and watch over him for a few weeks. If he takes drugs, then she'll leave, though I'm not sure why that is. It doesn't matter, I suppose.

Anyhow, the dynamic between them is good so far and the crime they solved in the first episode was clever enough to be interesting, though it's really the characters that made the show.

This isn't really great, but it's definitely good enough to watch again. It'll be interesting to see whether or not it gets a bit tired or goes completely off the rails.

Update on Revolution, Goon, and The New Normal

Well… I watched them all again this week.

Revolution actually stepped it up a notch and got a little more interesting. Still not interesting enough to make me care about whether it gets cancelled, but at least it was better than last week.

I still really like Go On and I have even less of an idea why. Looking back on it, it's silly and kinda dumb, but it's still funny enough to want to keep watching. John Cho plays his part perfectly. If you haven't been watching this, get on it. I don't know why you should like it, but you probably will.

The New Normal was, like Revolution, better than last week but I'm still not seeing it as a keeper. It has some interesting political commentary thrown in and I suppose the characters are endearing enough, but it's just not funny enough. It needs laughs, and doesn't have them.

So there you have it. Watch Go On. 🙂

Goon and The New Normal

Looks like "New Show Season" is fully upon us, and I've been bored enough to check out a few.

I mean… I went to TIFF and saw some Japanese porno, so I feel fully qualified to be a media critic now, at least for a little while.

Tonight I saw Go On, with Matthew Perry and The New Normal, with a bunch of people I don't think I've seen before.

Go On has promise. I'm not sure if it was really all that good, or whether it's just that Matthew Perry can be downright hilarious in a weird sort of way, but I was laughing throughout the whole show.

"Porsche! Start engine!!"

"Does it do that??"

"Shouldn't it???"

Too funny.

As for The New Normal… well… I couldn't help but think that the beginning was just trying to out-gay Modern Family, but that's probably just because they were making Modern Family references in the commercials over the past few days leading up to it. Overall though… meh. It just wasn't that funny. I absolutely bust a gut when the retarded guy called the gay guy a fag, but other than that I didn't find any real laugh out loud moments.

And before you get too offended by the above wording, please watch the show. You'll know exactly what I mean. That was some seriously funny shiz!

Again though… other than that scene, it just didn't draw me in. I might watch it again if I catch Go On and it comes on after, but if I set the PVR for Go On, then it's all over for this show.

So there you have it… there's a new funny Matthew Perry show to watch. I know at least one person that might read this blog that will appreciate that. Enjoy! 🙂

Revolution

I watched the premier of a new TV show called Revolution last night.

It's an interesting premise where electricity suddenly stops working so the world is in a perpetual blackout.

The show takes place 15 years after this blackout happens.

I won't get into too many details as they don't really matter. I'm only writing this to declare this show dead before it even gets going.

I just couldn't bring myself to care about ANY of the characters and some bits just made me laugh when they probably shouldn't have.

Ah well. Nice try. Maybe next time.

Is Quebec Leaving Yet?

So Quebecers have gone and elected a whole pile of separatists again.

I know they don't have a majority, but maybe we'll get lucky and they'll hit that milestone next time around.

Last time they went in that direction there was a giant national swell of unity sentiment.

"Please don't leave us. We'll give you presents" said the rest of Canada.

This time, I'm not really hearing much at all. It's like people just don't care anymore. The honeymoon is over and we're just not getting any benefits for putting out anymore.

So far as I'm concerned, Quebec can go off on their merry way. Good luck to y'all.

Just don't ask us for alimony.
