Ontario Energy Scams

I just had one of those energy salesman scammers show up at my door. Universal Energy or Energy Savings or whatever.

Not only is he trying to get me to switch to an overpriced energy reseller and lock in to some inflated prices for a few years, but he flat-out lied to me and told me he's affiliated with Toronto Hydro.

I asked if he worked for Toronto Hydro. He told me they're affiliated with them because they show up on the hydro bill.

That's like a phone sex operator telling me they're affiliated with Bell because the charge comes on your phone bill.

He also told me 90% of my neighbours were already signed up. I hope to God that isn't true. I don't want to live in a neighbourhood full of idiots!

I hate these stupid energy scams.

If you've signed up with one, you've been had. If you want more information on that, drop a note and I'll explain further.

  1. I work for one of these energy scams. There was a time when we pursued this reasonably honourably in terms of the story agents gave at the door, but we don't anymore, and it makes me sick a lot of the time.

I've worked for them a long time, and for other energy companies, and I read incessently about energy markets…and here is what I would say…

Electricity? Don't and I mean DON'T sign up. It's a way too immature market, no one can figure out Electricity Swap arrangements, and so forth. If you ARE locked in? Well…there is a very good possibility it COULD work out for you over five years, if you're stuck with it. I fully believe prices are going to go crazy in 2007, never mind where they go after that. Electricity is so political in Ontario, it's impossible to predict. Be sure to ask about "Balancing" if you sign up. There's a company (that I DON'T work for) signing people for 7.99 for five years, full rate, no balancing. THAT'S a good rate, really. You'll pay more now, but…with Ontario government rebates, owed to every hydro customer??? 7.99 without balancing is a VERY tempting deal. I'm on the fence with that one.

Now Natural Gas? Frankly, you a fucking fool if you don't lock in on gas, given that natural gas production in North America is in decline. I could honestly see prices doubling in the next five years…it's only warm winters that have saved us from a crisis so far. I could go on and on but I will say this: I looked it up and ALL the top execs at my company don't have electricity locked in rates, but they ALL have locked in gas rates.

    What does THAT tell you?

Compare and get the best rates for both at www.energyshop.com

Lock in a rate for gas RIGHT NOW, before we get more hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico or a cold winter. Prices are soft right now because we had neither this year, but that will change on a dime. RIGHT NOW is the time to buy low, sell high in stock market terms. As for electricity, sit tight and wait to see what the government does by 2008. After the election, that is.

And no, this is NOT advertising spam…I wish I could say more but I want to keep my job!
