Car Salespeople Are Lying To Me

When shopping for a limited production car, apparently the number of cars being made for Canada is wholly dependent on how much pressure the salesperson feels they need to apply to get you to decide you can afford something you can’t afford.

I think when I actually have money to buy a car, I’m just going to keep talking to salespeople until I find one I think might be talking straight to me. I’m getting pretty sick of being openly lied to.

On a related note, should a salesperson be offended when you know more about the car you’re talking about than they do?

“Hey… this is an option on that car over there. Do you know if it’s dealer installed or whether the car has to be ordered with it?”

“No, that’s not an option.”

“Yes it is. I know it is.”

“No, I don’t think it is.”

“Listen… I think I know more about these cars than you do… is there someone else you can check with to find out for me?”

“I’m sorry… I’m new here… ”

Then they still didn’t try to answer my question.

Isn’t it their job to know more? Shouldn’t they at least make an attempt to find the answer rather than making stuff up?

I’d rather they say “I don’t know, but I’ll go find out for you” than just making up crap. Idiots.

Finally… here’s my car-buying advice for today: Don’t go shopping for a car when you don’t plan to buy one for half a year or so. It just gets you all worked up over nothing. 🙂

  1. The next honest car salesman you meet will probably be the first one. Ever. In the history of automobiles.

Just make sure the car is right for you. Don't get something because its shiny and flashy and has a bazillion gizmos that will ultimately fail in a year or two. Or just get something used, like I did.

  2. No worries. I can fix broken gizmos.

Incidentally, I have an honest (so far as I can tell) salesman I deal with but he's a Pontiac/Buick/GMC/Cadillac guy so he's not of much use to me right now. I'll be contacting him though once I'm ready to buy so he can refer me to someone he knows. If he can send me to someone he knows and get a cut from the referral, and I can get a deal because he knows someone… then all should work out well. If not… well then there's no harm done.

Ultimately, I'll probably just call all the dealers for whatever car I decide to buy and let them bid against each other. Whoever gives me the best deal get the sale.

I'd like to find a salesperson I can develop some sort of business relationship with but right now I'd be happy just finding one that speaks English and knows something about the cars they're selling.

Why the hell would you do that? Isn't that like walking into a brothel with your male parts fresh off?

  4. I sure as all hell hope when you get to seriously shopping that you're driving 5 minutes down the road and out of the 416 area code to do it! Based on D's experiences, the sales folks East of us are a hell of a lot more helpful and decent at listening and admitting that they don't know everything than any of the ones we encountered in T.O. (and pretty much all the main dealerships are represented between us and Liverpool Rd…. heck quite a few are between us and Whites!)
