Gah!! It's IN MY HEAD!!!
This is a picture of my favourite tooth. I've spent a lot over the years to try to keep it in my head, but sadly, it would appear to be not long for this world. :(

I haven't yet made an appointment to figure out what needs to be done with it, but it's only a matter of time. Meanwhile... here's the tooth version of a horrible sports injury.

Poor tooth. I'm gonna miss it when it's gone.

Will Blackface be Okay Soon?
Ok... I know what you're thinking...

But bear with me for a moment. This morning I saw a story on CP24 about a vice-principal in Peel Region dressing up as Mr. T for Halloween, blackface and all. Now he's facing disciplinary hearings and all that.

Because, you know, blackface is wrong.

But here's the thing... I'm not sure whether everyone's completely lost track of WHY blackface is wrong and whether ALL instances of using makeup to become a coloured person (Robert Downey Jr. notwithstanding) is, by definition, wrong.

In an interview with one of the high school students, the reaction was, to paraphrase "Well... as a costume it wasn't bad but I think it's wrong to paint your face to be a different race".

The poor kid seemed to know it was WRONG but didn't seem to actually be offended by it or have any idea WHY it might be wrong. It just was.

In his eyes, dressing up as a different race is just wrong, but that's not right. I can dress up as Cheech Marin for Halloween and nobody is going to reprimand me for pretending to be Latino. Asians aren't gonna be pissed if I dress up as Bruce Lee.

So what's so wrong about dressing up as Mr. T?? Mr. T is badass. Mr. T is a good role model. Mr. T is not a negative black stereotype. So what's wrong with dressing up like Mr. T?

My argument is that NOTHING is wrong with dressing up like Mr. T. Does this mean that I condone blackface? No. I just think people have lost track of what the heck "blackface" really is.

If you paint your face black to perpetuate negative stereotypes like a travelling minstrel show, then THAT'S RACIST!!

But Mr. T? This is not the same thing!!! So what's it gonna take to get society to understand this?

People should learn some history.

I Guess the Rob Ford Love-In is Over
It looks like this is the end of the line for our lovable crackhead mayor.

It's just over a year ago now that I tried to pass on some sage advice. It would appear that he either didn't read it, or chose to ignore it, and HOOOWEE!!! What a year it's been!!

All I can hope for now is that some suitable replacement will step up to the plate. I mean... looking back... I honestly can't think of any ways he's screwed us over the way David Miller repeatedly did.

At least he got rid of the plastic bag tax. Revisiting my closing statement from a year ago...

So then... are there any other fiscally responsible people out there willing to run?

What Has the Senate Done For Me Lately???
The only news we've been hearing about the senate is about how they're all helping themselves to the public coffers.

Before that, they simply weren't in the news at all, unless some new one got appointed or something.

If we dismiss for a moment all the crap they've been doing to help themselves, can somebody tell me something any one of them has done for the benefit of the country? ANYTHING??

Is there some terrible law that they've voted down in their capacity as a "sober second thought"? Is there some tangible voice they've added to any debate? Have they done a damned thing to justify even existing as a governing body?

For all the bad news, I'd have thought there would be SOMETHING coming out to try to offset the bad publicity. "Sure... they're been making egregious claims left right and center to line their own pockets... but don't forget that they also... " WHAT??? WHAT HAVE THEY DONE???

If there was EVER a prime time to abolish this ridiculous institution for good... isn't it now?

Incidentally... the official government synopsis of their purpose is rather hilarious when thought of in the context of what they seem to actually be doing...

Unbundling Cable TV Packages
This seems to be the hottest news item today when it comes to what our government is doing to earn our loyalty.

Something I heard on the radio made me laugh though. They're saying that some stations will go out of business because not enough people will order them so they won't be able to generate enough advertising revenue.

If nobody cares enough about your channel to watch it, why are you in business in the first place? Are you a charity channel?

There's an easy solution here. If nobody is going to pick the channel out of a list and pay for it... but oodles of people will end up watching it if they happen to have it anyway... then the simple solution is to let the cable companies distribute it for free.

This is how broadcast TV gets by. If you've got the viewership, you can sell the advertising.

So what's the problem?
